Tenebrae [Shadows] Service

  • Christ Community Church 329 Riverside Avenue Charlottesville, VA, 22902 United States (map)

Christ Community Church hosts a Tenebrae service on Good Friday. Tenebrae means ‘Shadows,’ appropriate for this dark day. Following a traditional liturgical reading of the Passion (the portions of the gospel pertaining to the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of Jesus), this service incorporates darkness, light, and music to create a contemplative and somber atmosphere to observe this solemn day.

Cari will be playing prelude music as well as interludes during the readings and joining in on the hymns throughout and at the close of the service, as well as playing during Julie Bernstein’s special composition, ‘The Cross’ (see more about Julie here: http://juliebernsteinmusic.com ), which will also feature dancer Rebecca Lee.

Selections include:
Gluck - Minuet and Dance of the Blessed Spirits from Orpheus
Faure - Clair de Lune
Schumann - Romances
CPE Bach - Sonata for flute solo in A minor
JS Bach - Partita for solo flute in A minor
Telemann - Fantasia for solo flute in A minor
flute soloist on Julie Bernstein’s ‘The Cross’
Obligato on ‘Jesus, Remember Me’
